It's been a long and hard process with small successes. However, I've recently found this article that supports my previous research. Basically, it says that the Tahitian pareo originated from the traditional tapa cloth made by the natives. It originated separately from the Indonesian sarong. I've found that most tropical locales have originated or adopted similar clothing to the pareo or sarong. This is a great support piece and I hope to find more information to support this position.
